Cashing cheques via interest-based banks
*Please appropriately reference this fatwa to: www.fatwa-online.com, thankyou!*
Question
: Esteemed Shaykh, a person receives his salary via a bank cheque, so he visits one of the banks to cash this cheque. However, there are some halaalahs (pennies) left over; So is it permissible to leave these halaalahs [with the bank], or is it imperative he takes them? And if he were to leave them, would this be considered as assisting in usury?

Response: Firstly, before we respond to this question, let us ask whether depositing money in a [usury-based] bank is permissible or not? We say, if a person is in need of depositing money in the bank, then there is no harm [in doing so]. That is because the banks do not deal 100% in usury, rather, some of their transactions are usury-based, whilst others are free of usury.

So, if a person is in need of depositing money in the bank, then there is no harm in that, however, he must never take any interest from them, whatever the situation may be, because Allaah (Subhaanahu wa Ta'aala) says:

{O you who believe! Be afraid of Allaah and give up what remains [due to you] from Ribaa [from now onward], if you [truly] are believers}, Soorah al-Baqarah, Aayah 278
