The Egyptians claim the head of al-Hussayn is with them
*Please appropriately reference this fatwa to: www.fatwa-online.com, thankyou!*
Question: The people of Egypt claim that the head of al-Hussayn (son of `Alee ibn Abee Taalib and grandson of the Prophet (sal-Allaahu `alayhe wa sallam)) is with them in Egypt, whilst the people of Iraq claim a masjid which they have named "al-Mash.had al-Hussaynee" (the place of the martyrdom of al-Hussayn); I don`t know what is the authenticity of this and nor where the grave of al-Hussayn is situated according to the preponderant of the opinions of the scholars?

Response: al-Hussayn (radhi-yAllaahu 'anhu) was killed in Iraq in Muharram of the year 61AH and his body was buried in Iraq. As for the claim that his head was taken to Egypt and buried there, then we do not know the basis for this. And the researchers from the people of knowledge have disagreed with that; And your ignorance in this matter will not harm you, rather, that which is legislated for you and other than you from the Muslims is to be pleased with him and all the Prophet`s Companions (radhi-yAllaahu 'anhum).
